After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that, Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. --Robert Horton

What a fantastic movie, full of adventure and easy to watch and to get lost in especially when watched on a large HD screen using the blu-ray disc...I bought it for a fathers day gift as we had all gone to see it at the cinema before and had enjoyed it, so when my dad had bought himself a blu-ray player i thought what a great gift idea....an the even better thing about it is you also got a copy in DVD and of course my dad gave me that copy. Fantastic value for money...a movie you can watch again and again.

This is not my usual kind of movie but I bought it more for my Husband and children but I have to say that after watching the whole film, it was spectacular in every way, I did not even leave my seat for a toilet break.
The CGI in this movie is fantastic and the story I felt was predictable in places,I feel Avatar is well worth purchasing for all the family to enjoy.

i am not much of DVD watcher, but we got this at half term to take to the caravan,, we watched it with our grandaughter who is 7, and i think we enjoyed it more than she did,well worth watching again,
The best Blu-ray picture yet but you may need a firmware update April 25, 2010

In short, this is a disc destined to be a demonstration disc for some time: the picture and sound quality are absolutely awesome. If this film does't sell blu-ray on its own, nothing will!
I'm not going to describe the film itself, there are plenty of other reviews describing it and the main criticisms stand, i.e. the story is a familiar one: outsider visits different culture with an initial cynicism that grows to respect etc. But in a sense the story needed to be reasonably simple so as not to be overwhelmed by the visual aspect. In many ways, Titanic was similar: a couple fall in love on a ship that sinks. But it was the realism of the sinking that stood out.
You may find that a firmware update is needed before you can play this disc; both my Pioneer LX91 standalone player and my Vaio laptop initially refused to play it. Sony are still working on an update for the laptop but the Pioneer update posted recently worked fine. This is not a fault with the disc, more the constantly changing requirements of the format.
We were told that there were no extras because the available capacity was taken up with the picture and sound data. I expect that the latter is true but instead of giving us an extra disc with a DVD version of the film, why not put some extras on a second disc? Answer, so they can get us to double-dip later with an extended cut and special edition with the features. Then there's the 3D version rumoured to be set for a Christmas release.
Oh well, in the meantime sit back and prepare to catch your jaw dropping when you start the movie.
