Amazon.co.uk Review
If you’ve got too many pre-conceptions of just how a Sherlock Holmes movie should pan out, then it’s probably best that you check them in before popping this latest version in your player. Starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and accompanied by Jude Law as Watson, this film dispenses with some of the conventions of Holmes, and instead starts turning him into something of a period action hero.

Downey Jr. is more than up to the challenge too. Early scenes in Sherlock Holmes are more Fight Club than sleuth-influenced, with the hand of director Guy Ritchie behind the camera being very clear. But the film soon settles down and starts to have some fun, with the able assistance of Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams, among the supporting cast.

Yet this is Downey Jr.’s show, and he doesn’t waste the opportunity. He’s an engaging leading man at the worst of times, and he’s clearly having a ball here. What’s more, it’s immensely satisfying when his Sherlock Holmes gets down to the business of solving crimes, even though there are some really quite impressive action sequences to work through first.

There are problems, of course. There’s not enough flesh on the bones of some of the characters, and the early part of the film feels very different from the latter stages. But there’s solid groundwork here for the inevitable franchise, and watching Downey Jr. reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes over the next few years should be really quite good fun too. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!!!!   August 24, 2010

I was dubious about this, an American playing Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as a sidekick. I was pleasantly surprised, Robert Downey jnr is brilliant, hes eccentric to the point of lunacy...really well acted and Jude Law is a stiff efficient Watson (and both are easy on the eye) The glumness of London is captured brilliantly, the storyline seems absurd at one point until it becomes more clear. Everything does the ledgend of Sherlock holmes justice (they have actioned it up a bit, but thats hollywood)

I thought this film was a very entertaining film to watch, it had all the action and suprise and twists I'd expect from a good classical movie.

Brilliant movie, bang up-to-date yet an old fashioned Saturday matinée feel to the excitement. I loved the use of sound across six speakers. This movie does contain voices behind you!

Impeccable performances from all those concerned. Special mention to the editor James Herbert for containing all those jump cuts and matching them to the cut-throat dialogue. For long moments, especially early on, we do teeter on the edge of zaniness.

This movie is young and fresh and very exciting but does ripple with inventive twists to tickle the intellect. I was especially impressed by the fight scenes with their pre-action commentary explaining every move.

The villain is the despotic English control freak. Dreams of Empire using the same language as Herr Hitler but aimed at America. But Holmes is the Astaire hero. His effortless movements due to foresight and physical prowess. What a performance.

Sherlock Holmes is a highly recommended dvd. Proper widescreen, subtitles and blistering 5:1 soundtrack. Action adventure for the boy in us all.

5 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes - A New Take   July 5, 2010

Now this really is a new take on Sherlock Holmes, and is completely different from, for example, the Jeremy Bret characterisation. The plot is clever and devious; the dialogue fast and witty, and the acting convincing. I certainly thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. I thought the recreation of London in the 1895s was particularly good, and greatly added to the atmosphere of the whole presentation. If you are looking for a different version of SH, then give this some consideration - I hope there will be a sequel that is equally interesting.

Sherlock holmes dvd is a good watch. It is suitable for a good night of entertainment, funny and not taken too seriously. There is a bit of everything. The actors are brilliant, and scenes are interesting, the costumes and surroundings draw you in, and you feel you are in the era in which it is set. The story keeps you interested all the way through the film and you don't get bored. The comedy element is just right, which lets you enjoy the film without taking it too seriously. The action scenes are great, with surprises every time something happens. Well worth a watch for an entertaining few hours.
