5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film   July 19, 2010

Before I'd even seen this film I was being bombarded with negative feedback from others. People said Iron Man 2 had lost it's magic, that it was boring, not as good as the first - the same old stuff you usually hear. And I admit that between the time of hearing the negativity and going to watch the movie, I was a little worried. I wasn't convinced that the movie was going to be 'bad' in any sense of the word. 'Bad' movies in my list are things like Twilight and I couldn't believe that Favreau would really bring disappointment to that degree. But, like I said, I was a little worried.

After seeing this film three times now, I can safely say that it delivers. It's funny, it tells a convincing story of Tony Stark six months on from Iron Man, it has plenty of action (Action doesn't just mean people shooting each other you know) and the entire cast was brilliant. There wasn't a single bad actor in this. As always the visuals were stunning and it is an exciting film.

Despite what people have said the character of Tony Stark is, thanks to great writers and superb Robert Downey Jr, just as funny as he ever was. His sarcasm and ego are just as sharp, rather that it has been blended into the storyline in a more subtle way, instead of having him just spouting off gags every few minutes. With the character of Tony Stark being who he is, it would be too easy for the writers to steer the Iron Man story into 'The Hilarious Robert Downey Jr. Show'. Although this would please the Iron-man-no-funny-any-more crowd, it would ruin the films and cheapen the performances.

The only 'downfall' of this movie, if you even want to call that, would be that it incorporates elements of the comics and the greater Marvel world - Like Agent Coulson finding Captain America's shield in Tony's workshop, and Tony then using it to make a pipe level. To fans of the franchise these will be a bonus, to regular movie-goers it might be an alienation. I would say, however, that the film can be enjoyed by those who know very little about the Marvel universe in spite of it.

Overall this movie really has everything. Anyone who likes the Action/Comedy genre will love this film. If you enjoy good acting and a bit of sci-fi, I cannot recommend this movie more. I would definitely say to make your own mind up about this film and not to take negative feedback as gospel, because you could be missing out on a great time.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first film?   August 27, 2010

I went to see Iron Man 2 twice at the Cinema this summer. Excellent plot thoroughly enjoyable. Acting from Robert Downey Jr. was very satisfactory and the relationship between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts was humorous and touching. The fact that AC/DC did the soundtrack was a great surprise as I didn't know about it before I went to see it, I'm not a massive hard rock fan but in an action/superhero film it suited it down to a tee. Special Effects were very impressive and only served to enhance the story. All in all I think that Iron Man 2 was a very good sequel to Iron Man and would definitely say that it's the better of the two although the original Iron Man still holds its own. Highly recommend it to anyone who liked the first one, I'll definitely be buying it.

Hi, im not going to give an inch by inch review of the film like some other people, just short and sweet i think, ive seen this twice at the cinema already and i could watch it again and again, very very enjoyable film, its very funny, got great effects, good story and goes into the past well, and the film doesnt slow down from start to finish, robert downey jr is amazing as always! sam rockwell was great addition along with scarlett johanson, the soundtrack rocks aswell, and in my honest opinion any one who likes a good laugh and action will love this! 5 stars for me and i really don't think any one will be dissapointed bring on iron man 3 please!

5 out of 5 stars A worthwhile action-packed sequel   May 24, 2010

Robert Downey Jr was the best reason to watch the first Iron Man film since he seemed to slide into the role of Tony Stark so flawlessly and effortlessly. RDJ is just as amusing and fun to watch in Iron Man 2. If there were any doubts left over from RDJ's portrayal of Tony Stark from the first film, they're inevitably washed away with his convincing performance in the sequel. Newcomers Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson are just as impressive. Rourke has been on an incredible streak since The Wrestler and puts in another solid performance here. His Russian accent is pretty spot on and he shows a wider range of emotion than you may not be expecting. Rockwell has been on my "actors to keep an eye on" radar since Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I thoroughly enjoyed his smarmy performance as Hammer, who has all of the tools at his disposal to make as big of an impact on the world as Tony Stark has only to wind up falling short in the long run. The flirting between Tony and Johansson's Natalie Rushman is pretty captivating, but her crowning achievement is her fight scene in the latter half of the film that practically steals the show. Don Cheadle does have a few humorous one-liners and is great as War Machine, but doesn't really add anything that Terrence Howard already established with the role in the first film. It's slightly disappointing since Cheadle is known for his strong acting roles, but may be a result of the way the Capt. James Rhodes character was written for both films.

While the film is a worthy sequel, it does contain a few small flaws. What is it with Hollywood films lately having the climactic battle during the finale last five minutes or less? Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Clash of the Titans, and Iron Man 2 all share this trait. It doesn't take away from the fact that the conclusion to Iron Man 2 is still pretty satisfying, but my mindset seems dead set on thinking it's more satisfying when the antagonist has the advantage. He or she gains the upper hand and there's that moment where you think they may bring their evil plan to fruition before the protagonist outsmarts the antagonist for the win. When that last battle seems short, it makes it seem like the villain was all talk. Speaking of the action sequences though, they're spectacular and twice as big as the action in the original film. The problem is that the action seemed to get blurry during several of the more hefty action scenes. I'm not sure if it's because it's the way it was shot or what, but it made it seem like there was too much going on in the film to fully process in post-production or something.

Iron Man 2 is an extremely satisfying sequel on all accounts. While the original film is probably slightly better, the sequel does everything right and doubles up on everything in comparison; action, strong characters, teases for upcoming Marvel films, etc. Despite some of its early negative criticism, Iron Man 2 delivers a worthwhile sequel with a fantastic cast and spectacular action.

i had high high expectations for this film, since the first one was so good.i'm happy to say i wasn't disappointed.there is more going on this one that much is certain.Sam Jackson returns as Nick Fury head of Shield in a expanded role.Mickey Rourke plays a baddie(with relish and gusto)Scarlett Johanssen's character is underwritten and underutilized, which is unfortunate, because the character is rife with potential.here's hoping they remedy that situation in the upcoming avengers film.Sam Rockwell has an interesting role.Don Cheadle replaces Terrance Howard as Lt.Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, and i have to say,i think he is a better fit.and of course Robert and Gwyneth return as Pepper and Tony.and we finally get to know Pepper's actual first name.for me,Iron Man 2 is a 5/5
