Lighten up! September 8, 2010 academe (Cambridge UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Just a reply to a couple of points raised by others.
Firstly, as far as we know, Robin Hood is a conflation of various other 'rebels'and now unknown story-tellers favourites or a purely mythical creation.
There would have been already well-known stories of adventure and derring-do re-ascribed to 'Robin Hood' as the action hero 'flavour of the medieval day'.
Therefore, adding another layer to the mythos is not a crime, it's more a continuation of the historical process - the myth of Robin Hood did not spring into being fully formed and finished, after all...
Secondly, Prince John DOES NOT SIGN anything like the Magna Carta in the movie - it actually gets destroyed!
Any complaints about the dates for the signing of the Magna Carta being out by years are therefore irrelevant, as are complaints about Robin Hood's dad writing it.
Obviously, it was just a template, later revived and improved by the English Barons : ) (Joke!)
And thirdly, as for Eleanor of Aquitaine not seeing herself as English, well, she WAS Queen consort of England from 1154-1189, 35 years, her husband being Henry, Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy, later to become Henry 2nd OF ENGLAND.
At this point, the relationship between England and France was far more indistinct than in the modern day; great swathes of France were tied to England by marriage and conquest. If you were the monarch of a country, you would see yourself as a 'defender' of that nation, be it where you were born or not; it would be your royal duty.
Finally, the wandering accents - unless Ridley Scott did a Mel Gibson and made the whole film in Medieval Anglo Saxon English, Norman French and Medieval Latin, no accent is going to be 'authentic' - we're not even sure what the accents they had back then sounded like!
So, maybe just lighten up and enjoy this movie for the entertainment it is, i.e. not an historical documentary - although, btw, it's the only film I've ever seen that shows the correct way to take off a mail shirt (I'm a reenactor, so 'been there, done that'!)
Robin Hood: an honest opinion May 16, 2010 Kenn Stewart (Aberdeen, Scotland) 77 out of 98 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott and give this film 5 stars partly to offset the morons who give it 1. In truth its 4.5 stars but I feel hopefully the directors cut will add enough footage that I feel is missing to make it a 5 star classic as he did the Kingdom of Heaven DC. What I love about the film is the telling of how a Robin Hood (hero of historical myth) could have come about. As usual the direction, script, acting, editing, cinematography, costume, set design are flawless. But there is I feel a flatness about the middle section.
I find no problem with Russell Crowe in his mid 40's being Robin and his chemistry with Cate Blanchett is perfect, she gives a great performance as does most of the cast. His Robin is not the young swashbuckler but a moral, troubled man who has had enough of war. The immersion into the 13th century is brilliantly realised, Ridley Scott has no peer in transporting you to the world depicted.
Despite being a 12a it is an adult film with subtle cgi and after the overblown hype and sloppy filmaking of Avatar Iron Man et all its nice to see old style producing the goods, it is also the best Robin Hood film yet made, that says it all.
Another great film by one of the greatest directors of all time.
A little shocked at these mixed reviews July 21, 2010 S. Ruth Evans (Surrey) 16 out of 25 found this review helpful
I think perhaps anyone looking for the classic light hearted robin hood films will be disappointed in this version.
Most legends as based on real life events, altered and improved upon per telling for entertainment or preference until they become the well known stories to all. This version tries to be realistic, is Robin Hood ever did exist, his life was most likely like this.
I'm starting to make it sound like some sort of documentary now aren't I? I assure you that is not the case. The film tells the story of how a man became Robin Hood. It is packed with everything a good film requires; there is a wonderful plot, imperfect villains and heroes, some action and violence, some love and loyalty, parts that make your heart bleed and parts that make you chuckle out loud.
I would recommend seeing this film highly, an unique, fresh version of a well loved legend.
BRILLIANT August 7, 2010 MR. B (IRELAND) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Who in the right mind would put down this movie.... so what if it strays from the Robin Hood tale we all know they're too many films of robin hood tale we know out there, this was soooooooo good and different i loved the direction by ridley scott it was outstanding ... get with the times and go out and enjoy this movie. I was skeptical at first because of the bad reviews, but I had to see it for myself and Im glad I did. Bottom line - BRILLIANT!!!!!!!! Movie
Thank You for this Extended Cut, This is now the film of 2010 June 24, 2010 Mr. Paul Meenan (UK) 7 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have seen this film 15 times in the cinema, I loved it and yet this, unfortunately is spoilt by the edits made. The editor needs to be shot, I lost count of the continuity errors and poor editing, some of the shots used are awfull (when godfrey stands over robin locksley, check out how many times his hands move on the stake!) also ( when russell crow rides into the village and tells the french stop or its death, points his sword, marion sees walters body and then russell crow says we have two days! how'd he work that out??!)
Still The score is beautiful and carried the joys and emotions just as the gladiator one did, but if not better.
Yes, the accents are a bit .. hazy in places, but I understood them and they probably could be better, but don;t forget, its only a film! The story is great and after the first showing I knew this wa terribly edited and this was demanding a directors cut, I hope to see at least 20-40 minutes restored as the editor wa a prat for cutting what he did, the film really suffered for this. This movie is an epic and should have stayed about the 3 hour mark.
The support cast are excellent as in prince of theives the meery men are great. Mark Strong is the best villan of the decade, what a CV he's amassing.
Sets are excellent and this film does give you that adrenal fueled gladiator vibe. I belive this is the best movie Scott has done since galdiator and Alien before that, and this is THE movie of 2010.
